Talk by Timothy Snyder: “Ukraine, Russia, and the Future of Europe”

On April 13th, 2015 Yale historian Timothy Snyder spoke at Columbia University on the ongoing hybrid war between Russian and Ukraine, and its significance for the region, Europe, and the world. Professor Snyder discussed how what may appear to be a regional crisis could soon shape more of the world.

“By attacking Ukraine, Russia is directly threatening the European Union. If civil society and rule of law can be defeated in Ukraine, it can be defeated in the EU. It’s a self-awareness challenge for Europe, and the faster the EU treats it as a direct challenge, the better it is for the stability and future of the European Union.” – Timothy Snyder

Over 1.1 million people are internally displaced and over 6,000 have died in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. With violations to the Minsk II agreement, the future of peace in Eastern Europe remains uncertain and the post-WWII European order is now at risk.

We thank Dr. Snyder for the excellent lecture and interesting discussion with the audience.

This event was co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Student Society at Columbia, non-profit organization Razom and the Ukrainian Studies Program at Columbia.
