The Catastrophic Collapse of Independent Media in Crimea: The Last Two Years and the Road Ahead

Razom co-sponsored a discussion at Civic Hall on March 17th that brought together a delegation of activist from Ukraine to discuss the situation in Crimea with people from around the New York City area interested in Crimea and human rights. The event was titled:  The Catastrophic Collapse of Independent Media in Crimea: The Last Two Years and the Road Ahead.

The room at Civic Hall was packed with a mix of people who had an interesting conversation with a delegation of activists who were traveling from Ukraine on a trip organized by Freedom House. Michael Schwirtz, New York Times Journalist, led a conversation with Alim Aliiev, Co-founder of Crimea SOS Tetiana Pechonchyk, Head of the Board of the Human Rights Information Centre, and Olga Skrypnyk, Head of Crimea Human Rights Group and Almenda.

The event was co-sponsored with Volya Institute for Contemporary Law and Society as well as with Human Rights House Network. Participants were able to review and pick up copies of the report, Human Rights on Occupied Territory: Case of Crimea that was released last June.  The handbook of human rights that accompanied report was of particular interest.

The delegation had spent the day at the United Nations where they had briefed policy makers on the situation in Ukraine.
