Since late February, Razom volunteers realized there would be a need to support a wave of displaced Ukrainians (DUs) to the US. Razom partnered with another Ukrainian nonprofit, Ukrainian Jersey City, and started providing assistance to newly arriving displaced Ukrainians on both sides of the river.

WELCOMING DISPLACED UKRAINIANS IN NYC:

There was a lot of uncertainty pertaining to the immigration solution for newly arriving DUs and whether these people could qualify for any assistance in the US. Razom promoted, hosted, and facilitated multiple immigration webinars and legal clinics that provided DUs with the most up- to-date information as well as free legal services.

  • Provided DUs with 7 comprehensive immigration clinics (over 200 consultations, documents’ preparations, and partners’ covering filing fees)
  • Razom earned Mayor Adams’ $200k Ukrainian Response Initiative grant and is working with a coalition of NYC-based organization (Catholic Charities, NYLAG, CAMBA, Shorefront Y)
  • Seeking new grant opportunities and partnerships to continue assisting DUs

Ukraine is among the most educated societies in the world with a tertiary gross enrollment ratio (GER) of 83% (2014, UNESCO)

  • 99.8% of Ukrainians are literate (age 15 and over can read and write)
  • 65% of women have higher education (age 30 – 34)
  • 49.7% of men have higher education (age 30 – 34)
  • An estimated 4.8M jobs have been lost in Ukraine since russia’s 24 February invasion
  • Of more than 5M mostly women and children who have fled Ukraine, approximately 2.75M are of working age – 43.5%, or 1.2M, of whom had previously held jobs
